Why Does My Air Exchanger Need to be Cleaned?

HydroKleen Atlantic - Why Does My Air Exchanger Need to be Cleaned? - Dirty Air Exchange Vent

Dirty, clogged air exchangers can cause a myriad of health and economic issues. A clogged system will run slowly, driving up energy usage and increasing Carbon Monoxide levels. They can collect and hold contaminants such as mites, vermin and other allergens. Not only is the air in your home no longer being cleaned, but your system is blowing all of these back into the air you’re breathing!

Breathing in these contaminants can cause a myriad of health issues. Most commonly cold or flu-like symptoms and irritated allergies and asthma. In more severe cases it may cause respiratory infections and cause a sharp decline in those with respiratory diseases.

Have you noticed that no matter how diligently you dust your home, it never seems to be clean? A clogged air exchange system blows many fine dust particles. This leaves you with a cleaning job that never ends!

A professionally cleaned air exchange system will run efficiently.  In turn, this helps your system last longer and lowers energy and repair costs. Above all, a professional cleaning keeps you and your family breathing healthy air!

What is an Air Exchanger?

All homes built from the 1960’s to today require the installation of an air exchanger. Modern homes are much more air tight than those of the past and have become more capable of trapping contaminants. These contaminants include moisture, dander, dust, human cells, mould, and other allergens. Without a properly working air exchanger the air becomes stale and unhealthy; the air inside your home can be up to ten times more polluted than the air outside!

Air exchangers are compiled of a series of ducts within the walls and ceilings of your home. They work continuously to move the stale air out of your home while simultaneously drawing fresh air from outside, warming it up, and replacing the stale air. Additionally, these contain a series of filtration systems, which help keep you and your family safe from allergens.

Pet Dander May Worsen Your Asthma

Dog Smelling Flower: Pet Dander May Worsen Your Asthma

You may have heard that “animal dander” from your pet(s) may worsen your asthma. In fact, all furry/feathered animals produce animal dander. Thus, any pet dander puts asthmatics at increased risk of poor asthma control if they are sensitive.

What is Pet Dander?

While it is commonly thought that it is the hair from pets that causes the allergic cascade leading to asthma symptoms and short-haired animals are less allergic for asthma sufferers, both are myths. In fact, it is dander or the proteins in skin flakes, urine, feces, saliva and hair that trigger your asthma symptoms.

Does The Type Of Pet Matter?

Pets all shed certain amount of allergen-producing dander per week, so there are no hypoallergenic pets but some produce less allergen than others and may be a better choice if you really want a pet.

What Types of Pets To Get:

If you already know you have allergy symptoms or want to make sure you or your child will not develop symptoms from a particular pet, consider spending time with someone that has the pet you wish to get before you purchase or adopt that pet. Alternatively, consider animals that typically do not cause or worsen allergies like:

  • Turtles
  • Hermit Crabs
  • Aquarium Fish
  • Snakes
